Weapons class

Our weapons class is an integral part of our Okinawa Kempo Karate, significantly contributing to a holistic martial arts education. This class provides thorough instruction in traditional Okinawan training weapons and modern self-defense. It not only fosters technical skills but also enhances body control, mental fortitude, and a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical aspects of Okinawan martial arts.

Training Weapons in Detail

Katana

The Katana is a traditional Japanese longsword, known for its sharp blade and precise cuts. In training, students learn both the correct handling and the respectful care of this historically significant weapon. Katana training promotes precision, body control, and mental focus.

Sai

The Sai is a three-pronged striking weapon originally developed for defense against swords. It is made of metal and has two forward-curving side prongs (Yoku) as well as a long central spike (Monouchi). Sai training includes blocking and attacking drills, where students learn to catch, block, and control opposing weapons.

Hanbo (short staff)

The Hanbo is a staff approximately 90 cm long, used in training for close-quarters combat and quick attacks. Its compact size makes it a versatile weapon that can be used effectively for both defensive and offensive purposes. Training with the Hanbo improves reflexes and the ability to operate effectively in tight situations.

Bo (Long staff)

The Bo is a staff approximately 180 cm long, widely used in combat. Training with the Bo improves the reach and power of attacks, as well as the ability to control large movements. Students learn complex techniques that require strength, balance, and precision.

Jo (Mid-length Staff)

The Jo is a mid-length staff, approximately 128 cm long. It offers a balanced blend of flexibility and reach and is ideal for defensive and offensive techniques. Jo training promotes the development of flowing movements and the ability to quickly transition between attack and defense.

Tonfa

The Tonfa is a T-shaped striking weapon, originally used as an agricultural tool. It is particularly effective for blocking and striking techniques. In training, students learn to wield the tonfa in pairs, which promotes coordination and speed. The unique shape of the tonfa allows for powerful attacks as well as effective defensive maneuvers.

Kama

The Kama is a traditional Japanese sickle, known for its fast and precise cuts. In training, precise cutting and defensive techniques are practiced, often in pairs. Handling the Kama requires high skill and precision and promotes the development of finger dexterity and wrist control.

Modern Knife Defense

Knife defense holds a special place in our training, as it focuses exclusively on defensive techniques. The training aims to provide realistic and effective methods for defending against knife attacks. These skills are particularly relevant today and add a crucial aspect of modern self-defense to our traditional weapons class.
